Composting: Z-Best Composting Facility, located in Gilroy recieves compostable materials (yard waste, green waste, food waste, organic fraction of municipal solid waste, etc.). Z-Best is a 157-acre facility, the largest composting facility in California. Z-Best currently receives nearly 900 tons per day compostable wastes and has the capacity to receive up to 2,500 tons per day.

Processing: Once at Z-Best, the compostable wastes are processed to remove recyclables, (cardboard, metals, plastic containers, glass) and then ground to facilitate the composting process. These compostable yard waste and green wastes are placed directly into open air windrows while the compostable food waste and MSW are transferred to a bag feeder which stuffs the compostables in a 14 x 350 foot elongated composting bag. Perforated air ducting is also installed to add oxygen to the compostables wastes

 

SCREENING After 16 weeks, the composting process has been completed. The windrows and composting bags are opened and the contents are screened to remove non-recyclable materials, (plastics, textiles, glass, etc. The composted materials are than cured for an additional 4 weeks. After curing the compost is ready to market.

MARKETING: Finished products are marketed to large landscapers, nursery's and golf courses in the Bay Area. MSW compost is only marketed to non-food related users. Z-Best markets over 250,000 tons of organic products each year.
