Primary Values:
This low cost soil conditioner offers a bargain for adding organic matter to soils at new home sites where compaction and removal of the top soil is common.
Recommended uses:
Excellent soil amendment for conditioning heavy clay soils particularly at new home sites
Good preplant conditioner for new lawn
Long lasting soil amendment for sandy soils
Best Practices:
Use a reliable soil test to determine what nutrients are need beyond the excellent organic matter provided by Organic Soil Amendment (OSA).
- In computing the nitrogen needs of plants or grass for the first year, more nitrogen will be required, because OSA will stimulate microbial activity and use up all the existing nitrogen. To compensate for this lack of available nitrogen, add four pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet at preplant. Select a slow acting nitrogen. Be prepared to add nitrogen every one to two months for the first year. Add about one pound per 1, 000 square feet. Use leaf color as your indicator for adding nitrogen. Pale green leaves may indicate low nitrogen levels and dark green leaves may indicate too much nitrogen.
- In preplant preparation mix the OSA in 6" to 8" of soil at the same time you add other recommended nutrients (nitrogen and others). Water and let set for at least a week before planting. Monitor leaf color and add nitrogen where appropriate.
