Primary Values:
Protects the soil and blocks weed seed germination and growth
Recommended uses:
Z-Best for protecting soil and conserving moistureGreat top dressing after planting perennials and trees to prevent weed seed germination and growth.
- Excellent cover for pathways to prevent dust, keep mud off shoes, and stop weeds from growing.
- Spectacular textured background for annuals or delicate flowers and plants.
Best Practices:
Remember uncovered soil is damaged soil. Compaction from sun, wind, rain, foot traffic, and heavy equipment can be diminished with a 4" to 6" mulch
- A 4" mulch is best around most perennials and trees. At mulch depths of 6" or more plant and tree roots may start growing into the mulch. Roots growing into mulch, may lose their cover. Not good.
- In areas where the sole objective is weed prevention, lay mulch down at 6" or more.
- Mulch should not be put right up next to the base of trees or plants. It is important to keep rodents and excessive water away from this area to protect the crown of trees or plants.
- Just before the rainy season starts it is a good idea to move mulch away from the crowns of all plants and trees. You do not want water pooling at the crown. How far you move the mulch away depends on your situation. Move mulch away 6"to12"on side hills, in sandy soils, and where plants are 2" above soil level. In soils where there is poor drainage and crowns are at soil level or lower move the mulch away from the crown 12" to 24."
- Every spring check the mulch depth and determine if more needs to be added. Topping off with a small amount of mulch every year helps maintain the same depth and keeps the mulch looking fresh.
